University of the ̽ѡattends National Association for College Admissions Counseling Washington, D.C. College Fair /university-of-the-potomac-attends-national-association-for-college-admissions-counseling-washington-d-c-college-fair/ Sat, 31 Oct 2015 01:36:42 +0000 https://potomac.manaferra.com/?p=5476 WASHINGTON, D.C., October 30, 2015 – For the first time, on Tuesday and Wednesday this week, University of the ̽ѡparticipated in the annual college fair, sponsored by the Virginia-based National Association for College Admissions Counseling (NACAC), and held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.

The fair was an opportunity for the university to showcase its academic programs and meet high school juniors and seniors contemplating college attendance as the next step in their future. Scores of colleges and universities, both domestic and international, were present with career offerings ranging from cordon bleu cooking to advanced math and science programs. The fair typically attracts over 6,000 visitors including students, their parents and high school counselors. Counselors from NACAC also lend an air of impartiality to the event by advising students about the college process, including requirements for admissions, tuition costs and financial aid, and the differences among public colleges, private non-profit colleges and for-profit institutions.

Students were advised to come with lists of questions for college representatives. They were well-prepared with questions ranging from “Do you have biomedical engineering?” to “What do you offer for autistic students?” and even “Are you cheaper than the other schools in D.C.?’’ The student who asked about cost said “it was the most important question for him, because he knew of kids who never completed their degrees because of high tuition and living costs.” The biggest surprise was the substantial number of 12 and 13-year olds who were excited about attending college in the future. One girl said “my teacher made us come” and she never knew there were “SO many schools to choose from.” Another welcome sight was a woman collecting information for her daughter, her sister, her cousin and a niece, some of college age, some older. Happy faces were everywhere; let’s hope they turn into satisfied customers in the not too distant future!

NACAC was founded in 1937 and is an organization of 15,000 professionals. The organization’s mission is to serve students while they decide on pursuing postsecondary education.

University of the ̽ѡLaunches New Degree ̽ѡ /university-of-the-potomac-launches-new-degree-programs/ Thu, 09 Jul 2015 18:23:37 +0000 https://potomac.manaferra.com/?p=4850 frontofbuildingUniversity of the Potomac, accredited school with campuses in Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia, and online, announced that it is launching new degree programs this fall: Master of Science in Information Technology, Master of Healthcare Administration, and Bachelor of Science in Tourism and Hospitality Management. These new programs are added to Potomac’s existing certificates, associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees and are designed to meet the growing demand for qualified professionals working in healthcare administration, tourism, hospitality, and IT-related occupations.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, since January 2014, leisure and hospitality sector employment in the Washington, D.C. area grew 3.3%. The local rate of employment growth in leisure and hospitality matched the national increase. “We attribute this to a demographic shift in the Washington D.C. metropolitan region that have created a positive environment for hospitality businesses over the past several years. By launching our new degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management, we are planning to fill a void for highly educated hospitality and tourism professionals,” said Dr. Clinton Gardner, President, and CEO at University of the Potomac.

As a university specializing in business and technology, ̽ѡis well-positioned to launch a graduate program in information technology. The Master of Science in Information Technology (MSIT) builds on the expertise of the University in key areas already offered at the undergraduate level such as general information technology, information systems management, cybersecurity, digital forensics, and network security management. “The MSIT program will provide a continued pathway to advanced degrees for our current students and alumni. More generally, a goal of the program is to prepare working professionals, foreign-educated students and those seeking meaningful roles in the information technology management and cybersecurity sectors, to assume leadership positions in the public, private and not-for-profit areas,” said Dr. James Booker, Graduate ̽ѡ Dean at University of the Potomac.

Further, University of the ̽ѡcurrently offers Bachelor of Science degrees in a number of business-related fields with a concentration in Healthcare Management. Because of this, ̽ѡis well-positioned to launch a graduate program in Healthcare Administration. The goals of the Master of Healthcare Administration program are (1) to prepare managers for leadership positions in the public, private and not-for-profit healthcare sectors, and (2) to provide these leaders with the breadth and depth of knowledge necessary to address real-world healthcare challenges effectively. As the backbone of healthcare systems, healthcare administrators take on the duties of overseeing vast expanses of medical personnel. As the structure and financing of the healthcare industry changes, healthcare administrators must be able to adapt to new environments. The Master of Healthcare Administration (MHCA) program at ̽ѡaddresses these key areas.

̽ѡ will be rolled out gradually, starting this fall with the Master of Science in Information Technology. Information about application deadlines will be posted on the University’s website, as well as on the University’s social media channels.
