Commencement Program Class of 2020

April 13, 2020

Dear: UOTP Graduate

Let me take this opportunity to congratulate you on successfully completing the academic requirements to receive your degree at University of the Potomac. We know that completing your degree is an exciting time for you and your family and friends who share in your success.

I am writing this letter to inform you that due to the on-going and continued concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic, University of the 探花精选has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Graduation Ceremony that was scheduled on Saturday, June 27, 2020. Since our public health experts continue to warn all entities to avoid conducting events and gatherings that involve bringing together large groups of people, and to ensure the continued safety of our entire community, we felt that it was important make this decision at this point on time.

Do know that this was a very difficult decision to make and we relied on information and recommendations from our public health professional to assist us in making this final decision. Our employees are exploring other ways to celebrate your accomplishment in a manner that does not violate the mandates that have been put in place by local, state and federal government officials. In the near future, we hope to share our thoughts and plans to help you celebrate the completion of your studies at Potomac.

Again, congratulations on achieving this great accomplishment. Our educational community enthusiastically welcomes you as the newest alumni of University of the Potomac.

Please stay safe and healthy during this challenging period in the history of our world. We look forward to reuniting with you in the near future.

Sincerely yours,

Clinton D. Gardner, Ph.D.

President

June commencement ceremony to move online; Honors Reception planned for October

Amid a worldwide effort to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, University of the 探花精选will move its commencement activities online this summer and invite all Honor students and one guest to campus this fall to attend our Annual Honors Reception.

The University-wide ceremony will be held online at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 27, 2020. It will include welcoming comments, speeches, announcements of awards and honors, and most importantly, the conferring of degrees. All the University鈥檚 departments are committed to exploring creative online and virtual opportunities to recognize their graduates in June.

University of the 探花精选President Dr. Clinton Gardner acknowledged the mixed emotions he has heard from graduating students as changes have occurred. Most importantly, we understand that graduates and families need time to plan for commencement activities. Considering the uncertainty of the ongoing pandemic and the responsive measures that the nation is taking, Dr. Gardner and other University leaders set in motion a plan for a truly memorable celebration in June.

Commencement is undoubtedly one of students鈥 greatest achievements at this point in their lives, and we will recognize and celebrate. It is unfortunate that we are experiencing a historic, unprecedented event that requires extraordinary actions. We have been following the government officials and CDC guidelines to stop the spread of the virus and protect our community while honoring our graduates in the most meaningful way we can.

Later this year, we will host our Annual Honors Reception for our honor students and one guest. Graduates will receive more information about this event as it becomes available.

For the latest information on the University鈥檚 response to the coronavirus, visit University of the 探花精选website. Visit the University鈥檚 commencement website for detailed information on commencement-related activities.

Campus Director & Dean of听IT 探花精选

Like most people, I lament my life鈥檚 problems until I or someone close to me is burdened by true misfortune or calamity. Traffic causing an intolerable long commute, the unforeseen bill or expense, gas prices, even a mistake on a dinner order 鈥 things I have allowed myself to get frustrated or upset over, that in the scheme of things are absolutely insignificant, only put into perspective by real hardship.

Over the past month I have seen true distress; my wife struggling with a neurological condition that makes sleep and sometimes even thinking impossible; my Grandparents displaced from their home at the Jersey shore by Hurricane Sandy, a home they鈥檝e lived in without incident since 1962.

鈥nd my 22 year old daughter battling recurrent cancer.

What right do I have to feel encumbered by anything as trivial as intermittent phone service when my family around me is laboring through real difficulty.

I don鈥檛. I鈥檇 trade with any one of them that they wouldn鈥檛 have to endure what life has thrust upon them. I know I cannot, but Thanksgiving week is teaching me a great lesson on humility and appreciation.

Rather than be redundant and offer advice to 鈥渁ppreciate what you got,鈥 I am going to use this piece more selfishly and thank them as well as everyone that has been an important part of my life this past year or more.

I thank my wife for being more amazing every day and showing me infinite patience; for sometimes being the adult in our marriage! My house became a home the day she showed up.

I thank my daughter, for being my miracle. Her strength is indomitable.

I thank my mother and father, for trying so hard for so many years to teach me the lessons they knew I could only learn by screwing them up anyway!

I thank my in-laws because my wife鈥檚 perspicacity, grace and principles come from the best stock; the type of people that make you better for just being around them.

I thank my grandparents, for being the role model for love that every couple should witness.

I thank Laura, the President of University of the Potomac; for her leadership, the opportunity to be part of something really special and important, and proof that the term 鈥渃hanging lives鈥 is not rhetoric or a marketing line.

I thank my colleague Deb, for her unbridled spirit and tenacity; a beacon of verve amidst a sea of 鈥渂lah.鈥

I thank the entire leadership team; Laura, Walt, Deb, Linda, James, Tim, Theresa, Vickey, and Mike, plus recent additions Danny (who isn鈥檛 new, but just started showing up), David and Alexandra 鈥 for being the 鈥渂rain鈥 of my 鈥渟torm.鈥 I could easily add what each of them brings to my life as individuals, but better to keep out the specifics and protect the innocent!

I thank my team; Adrian, Kim, and Yasir 鈥 as well as my students, for however few they are extraordinary 鈥 for being my muse. They are my inspiration!

I thank my friends, who still respond to my career as an educator with, 鈥淲ait. What?鈥 I thank them for always being there.

Most of all, I thank God. For giving me this life I wouldn鈥檛 trade for anything.

Be selfishly thankful this year for all you have鈥
